The concept of a lifelong career with one employer has become less common in many sectors. Technological development, globalization and changing business models have created new opportunities while simultaneously increasing the need for professional adaptability.
Employees may now change roles, organizations and even professions several times during their working lives.
Consequently, employability increasingly depends not only on qualifications obtained at the beginning of a career but also on the ability to acquire new competencies throughout it.
This does not mean that specialist expertise has become unimportant. On the contrary, many organizations continue to require advanced technical knowledge.
However, professionals may also need transferable skills such as communication, critical thinking, adaptability and problem-solving.
For students entering the labour market, career planning should therefore involve more than identifying a desirable first job. It should include developing the capacity to respond effectively to professional change.
